UNITECH is currently developing a new solution for the production of subsea power cables which will result in near endless cable lengths without joints, at lower cost and higher quality than current cables. A floating cable factory will be built which is a further development of an original concept developed and patented by Cabletanker AS and GM Jacobsen. The floating plant will be located at the technology center at Rubbestadneset, but it will be possible to move the entire plant to other locations as needed.
Aluminum will be used as conductor material in the cables instead of copper. Here there will be a collaboration with Hydro and Norcable. Hydro Karmøy manufactures aluminum alloy, the newly started Norcable wire mill at Karmøy manufactures the aluminum threads, and UNITECH will then twine and plasticize the cables before shipping them to the floating factory at Rubbestadneset where the finished power cables are manufactured. The cables will among other things be an important part of UNITECH’s commitment to offshore wind.
